Passage Programs
|
| Throughout
history and still today, communities have recognized and supported
the passage of girls and boys from childhood into young adulthood.
We look to ancient and contemporary sources to inspire and create
a meaningful environment to honor this need and tradition. We
utilize mythic archetypes, symbolic ritual and ceremony to create
a Mysteries Passage experience.
Because it is more of a process than a product, some of the activities
and focus will be determined by the "community" that
supports this passage initiation. Whether the individuals and
family members call themselves the Council of the Elders,
or the Passage Council (or any name that the girls, boys
and supporting community choose for themselves), this group needs
to determine a core set of values and purpose to inform this journey.
See below for Hawk of May Mysteries, for boys and Crescent
Moon Mysteries, for girls. Each program begins with an intensive
weekend initiation.
A path in the Mysteries, by its very nature, is
not meant to be defined. Though we may use a framework or armature
to support our underlying purpose, often there is a multi-layered
experience that loses some of its power when we dissect it and
enumerate it. |

For
Girls Crescent Moon Mysteries offers
deep and culturally diverse experiences of the Divine Feminine
in Nature, in Mythic Archetypes, in our connection to the Moon
in our cycles... We remember the ways in which women have come
together in circles to honor themselves and each other... Girls
are invited to explore and express their evolving body, developing
identity and common questions and concerns. Each girl has a personal
as well as a universal Mystery to unravel and weave together in
a way that depicts her own unique story as part of the tapestry
shared by girls throughout time... It is sacred and beautiful
AND we also make time to be in the moment to play and have fun. |

For
Boys Hawk of May Mysteries
offers
deep and culturally diverse experiences of the Divine Masculine
in Nature, in Mythic Archetypes, in our connection to the power
of the element of fire represented by the Sun. Hero and warrior
of myth and legend have been universal themes in the development
of the male psyche. In some native traditions, adolescence is
named the "Thundering" years, expressing the fire
and energy of moving out of childhood and into adulthood...
It is a potent time to harness this energy with direction and
balance. |

| Each
boy or girl has one same gender mentor. Mentors are enrolled,
trained and participate in the rites of passage weekend. Mentors
can be family members (and many are) but cannot mentor their own
child. The mentor’s role is to witness, support and help
reinforce healthy behaviors. The mentor’s purpose is to
listen, accept, and encourage. All staff and mentors must complete
mandatory 24 hours of training prior to their participation in
the program. All staff and mentors must undergo an FBI / Police
background check before working with youth. Mentors receive ongoing
training and support and commit to participate throughout the
year.
For
9 months girls and their female mentors come together in a mentorship
circle for activities they plan together. Boys do the same with
their male mentors. Boys, girls and mentors come together to participate
quarterly in an all day co-gender skills training program, GIST,
to build relationships and community.
We are working in close collaboration with
Boys To Men, Girls
Initiate and the COaMUNITY™
Project. |
